This was a real find, a waterfall that we had not ever heard about. It's Fern Falls, in the Coeur d'Alene National Forest, Idaho, USA. The falls are on a tributary of Yellow Dog Creek.
One of my favorite photos from our 2011 trip. An African elephant (Loxodonta africana) trunk, at a waterhole in Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa, Africa. The species is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species at iucnredlist.org.
"Inside the Wild Lily"
Wood lily (Lilium philadelphicum), a wildflower. Taken in Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada.
"Below Triple Falls I"
Triple Falls, which spills into Reynolds Creek, in the high country of Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. That is snow up above the falls, still there in August. The previous winter had been a particularly snowy one.
"Quiver Trees at Twilight"
Several quiver trees or kokerbooms (Aloe dichotoma) after sunset. Taken at Orbicule Kop, near Springbok, South Africa, Africa.
I used a free plug-in that was called Pixel Bender. Now Adobe has renamed it Oil Paint and has rolled it into Photoshop as a filter. It has a customizable interface to do oil paintings and other special effects. I like the smoothing and curls that it adds to foliage. The original photo of the fall foliage was taken in the Fishlake National Forest, Utah, USA.
"Flowers and Leaves"
Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis), a wildflower. It is also known as bunchberry dogwood, dwarf dogwood, Canadian bunchberry, or dogwood bunchberry. Taken in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA.
"Curious Young Ewe"
A bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) ewe amidst fall foliage in Kananaskis Country. Taken in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Alberta, Canada.
A cluster of alpine forget-me-not (Eritrichium nanum) wildflowers. It had rained the previous night. Taken in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA.
"After the Bash"
Two bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) rams (males) pause after they had just bashed heads. They looked dazed and confused, and as you can see, the one on the right got a bloody nose out of the battle. The bighorn sheep is the state mammal of Colorado. Taken in Clear Creek County, Colorado, USA.
Detail of a plains zebra (Equus quagga). Taken in the Hluhluwe Game Reserve, South Africa, Africa.
A view of the Canadian Rockies in Kananaskis Country, taken in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Alberta, Canada.
I liked the purity of this with the white sky and zebras in B&W. They are plains zebra (Equus quagga). Taken in Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa, Africa.
Two bull elk (Cervus canadensis) spar, with one of them nearly poking the other's eye with a point of its antler. Taken in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada.
A wild burro (Equus africanus asinus) jenny and foal. This may look like a maternal moment. In actuality the jenny was just about to tug sharply on the little one's ear to get it to stand up after a lengthy rest. Taken in Custer State Park, South Dakota, USA.
"Love Bite II"
Two impala (Aepyceros melampus) groom. They took turns licking and biting each other. Taken in Kruger National Park, South Africa, Africa.
"Leading to Reflection"
A high-altitude meadow of alpine wildflowers leads to a seasonal tarn reflecting Piegan Mountain. Taken in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA.
This flower just looked like a bride should be carrying it down the aisle. Subalpine spiraea (Spiraea splendens), a wildflower. Taken near Solomon Lake, Kaniksu National Forest, Idaho, USA.
"Hunting in the Snow"
A coyote (Canis latrans) jumps as it hunts for rodents under the surface of the snow. Taken in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA.
"Emerging With Prey"
A coyote (Canis latrans) with its prey, a Northern pintail duck (Anas acuta). Taken in Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, USA. The coyote was still wet from having entered the water, evidently. (We did not see the actual hunt.)
