What a joy it was to spend time with several pairs of loons and their chicks. This was something I had been wanting to do for years! The behaviors, their beautiful patterns, and an equally beautiful environment around the lake all contributed to the joy. Here you see one of the adult common loons (Gavia immer) with its two young chicks. The riding-on-the-back phase is very fleeting, so I was delighted to have been able to witness it. Taken from my kayak at Lac Le Jeune Provincial Park, British, Columbia, Canada.
All the loon species are special! This is a red-throated diver as it is known in Iceland (Gavia stellata) or red-throated loon in the Americas, with her two chicks. Taken near Bakkagerði, East Iceland.
